RECENTLY UNEARTHED ARTIFACT FROM ANCIENT PAST

artifact.jpg

Student-aged people sure do romanticize theirselves, don't they? At the time, I thought I was being all gritty and unsparing, but that heroic pose! The main thing that comes flooding back to me when I look at this is how hellish oil painting was. I was used to hit-and-run sketching, and here I was forced to spend hours on a nose. And when, after weeks of laboring, you step back and see you have the perspective wrong, there's nothing to do but scrape it all off and start from scratch. It was hellish, I tell you! I spent most of a semester on this painting, and never did another. One more episode in a life full of false starts. Ah, yoot! Ah, regret!

Thanks, guys. And Maggie, you know what they say about hellish times. Builds character. Good luck.

Ah, the pitfalls of realistic painting. You always feel like its not finished. You can't stop but you can't go on. It turned out great though, this one but I understand your impatience.

Uhm, who's Dan? This is you, right?

That would be a very difficult painting to do. I can't believe you gave up oil painting! After a few years it doesn't take hours to do a nose. Seriously.

Mom loves it as do all the old folk at the Village. If only I had a small fraction of that talent....

I love the "yes, dammit, I AM painting from a mirror, and not afraid to expose that reality to the world instead of perpetrating that bourgeois 'window perspective' bullshit from those old dead rennesaince bastards. This is new and honest! This is a MIRROR perspective!" ahhhh, youth...
Nice value contol, by the way.
