Since Mr. Crack Skull Bob seems to have shuffled off to another state for a while, perhaps we readers/viewers ought to make some good use of this site?

I was tempted to start leaving lines from Ulysses. But if it took three years of one-liners in The New Yorker's "events" section (under the "Fantasticks," "Hello Dolly" and "Fiddler on the Roof" listings) just to get through the first chapter of Leopold Bloom's day in Dublin, it's unlikely we'll make much progress here.

Anybody want to start a round-robin reading of "Cold Mountain"? Or maybe "Marley and Me"? That's just the kind of stuff that'll have old Sparky hustling back to the Old Dominion faster than you can say geoduck!

I can't find a transcript for Marley and Me online but there are 1,119 reviews on Amazon (mostly positive). I think if we break these up into manageable chunks--let's say we each reprint about 150 reviews a piece?--we could really get the comment numbers up here. I think that would be a nice treat for Wally when he gets off the plane this afternoon. And personally I'd be curious to see just how far you can push Squarespace before it spontaneously combusts. I'll start:

Such a touching book, June 27, 2009
By Emily L. Schernau (New York, NY)

This book is very touching, and will be enjoyed by any dog lover. Marley is NOT the stereotypical "good dog". He is not Lassie, and that is part of his charm. He is loyal, albeit wild and disastrous. This book had me laughing out loud at parts, and tearful at other parts. I definitely recommend it for any dog lover.

Okay book, better movie, June 25, 2009
By David Seltzer - See all my reviews
I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I actually liked the movie of Marlie & Me better than the book. Usually it's the other way around. The book contains a great story and is written (over all) quite well. But it does get a little slow at times and seems to be way overhyped. I went into it with way too high of expectations. Keep your expectations in check and go into this book with an open mind. And then watch the movie!

John Grogan Writes the Way He Loves Dogs, June 9, 2009
By JAD (The Sunshine State) - See all my reviews
No one needs another review of "Marley" since there are so many good ones here already but this book is so fine, both in subject and in style, that I cannot resist adding a few words.

John Grogan writes in the same way that he loves dogs, with all of his heart and soul. This is definitely a dog-fancier's book--and while it is almost inconceivable to me that there are those in the world who do not love dogs, I think that even they might find their hearts strangely warmed by Grogan's account of the "world's worst" dog.

Anyone who has ever raised a dog from a puppy (three and counting in our household over the years) will relate to most of Marley's antics; even the most hard-boiled among us will find something to cheer. If you have never seen your puppy streaming through the house with a pair of unmentionables between happily grinning teeth, or if you think that puppies cannot eat things like book lights and zip drives, think again. And it has got to go somewhere, dearie. But all of that chewing and poo-ing is a minor byproduct of the larger reality that when a dog loves a person, that person's life is enriched immeasurably more than words can express. Grogan comes as close to anyone I know in communicating these truths. In an age where simple love and affection are often undervalued, Grogan and his mischievous Marley help us readjust our thinking for the better.

This is essentially a doggie biography, so we get to know Marley at every stage of his life. Because Grogan used Marley as the subject for his newspaper column, each passing stage is described with fresh, vivid language, and of course, with both humor and tenderness.

All biographies conclude in the same manner, with the end of the earthly life of the main subject. So if you cry at the end, that is part of the realty of life. I was about to say "part of the human condition"--and then I remembered that Marley is / was a dog. But those of us who love dogs will nod and say "yes" to that sentiment, as well.

A story familiar to all dog owners., May 28, 2009
By Sahra Badou "Bibliophile" (Tokyo, Japan) - See all my reviews

This is the story of a naughty dog called Marley.

I've had this book on my shelf for almost two years but never felt the urge to read it. My little cousins (7 and 9 years old) read it and loved it. It was not until I decided to buy a bullmastiff that I finally picked it up and read it.

I've had dogs (a German Shepherd, Cockel Spaniel, and a Saint Bernard) as a kid, and I know how much work they can be. As far as I can remember all my dogs were naughty. My Saint Bernard, for example, had the habit of eating stones, and we routinely opened his mouth to remove them. Eventually, he needed to have an operation to remove all the swallowed stones from his stomach!

The author really describes his relationship with his dog very well, and this brought up many memories to me. True, a dog witnesses chapters in your life, like the birth of your children, and the ups and downs of your life. No matter how much you scold your dog, he (she) is always there for you. A dog is your ultimate friend for life. You cannot find a more faithful partner than your dog.

The book recounts the story of how the author first chose his dog; how he named him (after Bob Marley); the pain of training him (his first trainer was Miss Dominatrix); his naughty behavior; his sting at acting (yes Marley acted in a movie); how he caused problems between the author and his wife; why the author's wife wanted him out of their lives, and how she forgave him; the strong bond between Marley and the author; and finally the death of Marley. This is the story of Marley from childhood, to a senior citizen, and finally death. The end of the story is very touching, but one that all dog owners go through.

I think that if you do not own a dog or never owned one, you might not relate to this story. This is not a captivating story that is action packed, nor one that keeps you guessing, ending with a twist. This is a simple story, very eloquently told, of a man, his family, and his dog. This is a story similar to one lived by many dog owners.

One negative comment I have concerns the author's spouse hitting Marley with her fists. This is dog abuse. I am surprised the author even mentioned this incident in his book. Many pet owners will not be too happy with this incident.

I am also against active dogs living in small apartments. Dogs need to live outdoors, like nature intended. A large garden is ideal for active dogs. I understand that not everybody can afford to live in a house with a large garden. In such a situation, I recommend owning a less active dog than a Labrador Retriever. I'm sure if Marley lived in a large garden the author would never have called his dog the worst dog ever!

Funny and touching, May 26, 2009
By Prassina (Tucson, Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog (Paperback)
I was impressed by how John Grogan told this story. No matter how close to his heart his pet may have been, it still is just a dog. To be able to come up with a narrative as enjoyable - no, I should say, as riveting- as he did is the sign of a top-notch writer, which he is. He never strayed far for his subject i.e. his dog Marley. Whenever he did, it was for a short period of time (such as when he describes his and his wife's trip to Ireland, when they left the dog with a sitter). I did not find that distracting. In other words, Grogan keeps a tight grip on the plot, an important skill that helps keep the reader interested. His style is crisp, original (e.g. Marley's "triple espresso energy), hilarious. He can move you to tears without sounding overdone.
I liked the book so much that I got the children's version for my 8 year old daughter who absolutely loved it, too. (it is purged of details such as his wife's visits to the obstetrician, her subsequent miscarriage, and other such information inappropriate for young readers - a wise decision.)

Very good book!, May 26, 2009
By Michelle V. Mcentire "hlthy1" (Salt Lake City, Utah) - See all my reviews

I loved the story of Marley --how a couple decided to get a dog and the impact that the decision had on their lives. It is an experience millions of American families can relate to. I also greatly enjoyed the way the author wrote. I had the pleasure of listening to the author tell the story on the book on CD, and I felt lucky to be hearing it told by the person who knew just where heightened inflection needed to be placed. I had planned to listen to it in the car on the way to and from work, but I couldn't get enough of the story and brought it into the house to hear more. My daughter listened to the second half of the story through to the end with me, then checked the book on CD out from the library herself so she could listen to it from the beginning.

This book would probably even make people who've never owned a pet a little teary-eyed, but just like having children changes people, a pet is a package of laughter, hope, joy, and tears, and Marley & Me reminds us there's nothing quite like the experience of living with one.

Everyone should read it, May 19, 2009
By J. Terry "Terry" (Florida) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog (Paperback)
I was completely unaware of this book until I saw the movie. Not knowing anything about the story (except that it had a dog in it), my family watched the movie at home while nursing a beloved pet who was dying. It made it especially hard to watch. Then our Zuzu passed away just days after we had watched this movie.
I wish I could buy a copy of this book for everyone to read. The overall message, besides how much adventure a dog can bring to your life, is that YOU DON'T GIVE UP ON THEM.
A close friend of mine has given up on eight dogs! She's had only two cars but she has given up EIGHT dogs in the past ten years. She gives up on them before they've finally figured everything out and found their place in the home.
It breaks my heart. I actually was able adopt one of her "throw-aways." He was a MESS when we got him. She didn't even know what vaccinations he had or hadn't had, both of his ears were infected, he had three different kinds of worms, uncontrollable diarrhea as a result, ate like a pig (cause he wasn't sure when he'd eat again), and unaffectionate to a fault. He was so angry (?) and stubborn that while it only took me one day to kennel train him, it took nearly 18 months before he would stop pooping in the house!
But I never gave up on him. Once he joined our family, he was ours forever. He's a great dog now. He figured out what I wanted from him and he figured out where he fits in. He's a pleasant little pug though he'll always have that stubborn and independent attitude.
I have since adopted a Lab/Pit-mix from the ASPCA who has turned out to be the most RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING DOG I have ever had. He gets along great with the pug. But he, too, really pushed the envelope when he was a puppy. He tore up everything he could get his teeth on, forgot his manners and nipped at our little boy (whom he saw as another puppy) and almost got thrown out of the house by an angry daddy for that one. But we persevered. And, now, I cannot imagine my life without him!
As I said, everyone should read the book and everyone should learn to NEVER GIVE UP on them. The pay off may be a long way off, but it's so worth it.

Great dog, lousy owner, May 17, 2009
By C. Roxana (Sweden) - See all my reviews

The author thinks he loved his dog but he is wrong. You don't love your dog when you keep him locked in a garage 10-12 hours a day (specially in Florida, where it's so hot). And the examples of abuse can continue, other people described it already so I won't go through them all.
There are better books for dog lovers, keep your money.

A Book Perfect for all Dog Lovers, May 17, 2009
By s maier (Illinois, USA) - See all my reviews
The story Marley and Me is about a dog, Marley, but it is just as much about his owner, John Grogan, and his wife, Jennifer. The book follows John through his life from his multiple jobs as a writer, the birth of his three kids; Patrick, Conor, and Colleen, and everything in between. Marley is a lovable yellow lab. He entered the family as a puppy. John and Jennifer went to a breeder and picked Marley because he was on sale. They later found out why. Marley is very destructive and gets himself into a lot of trouble. As Marley gets older, he puts back most of his puppy ways and grows up, but not completely.

I, as a freshman in high school, loved this story. It is one of the best books I have ever read. Anyone who has ever owned a dog can easily relate to this story. I have two dogs. Therefore, making this story very relatable for me. This story reminds me of my own dogs and that is why I think it is so relatable. While I was reading this story, I put my dogs into the story and I could see my dogs doing the same actions Marley did because my dogs and Marley have some similar characteristics.

The purpose of Grogan writing this story is to share with his readers his life with the "world's worst dog" Marley. The story demonstrates the strong bond between dogs and man. It shows why dogs are called "man's best friend." Any dog person can easily relate to these lessons Grogan is trying to get across in the book. I think Grogan is very successful in showing how dogs and man have such a great bond. From John and Marley taking walks through the park together, to Marley being excited when anyone walks through the front door. Of coarse, the everlasting bond of dog and man has to end sometime, and sometimes it seems to come so fast. Marley will be in the Grogan's hearts forever.

In 2008, this hard-warming story was turned into a box office hit. The movie starred Owen Wilson as John Grogan. It also starred Jennifer Aniston as Jennifer Grogan. I saw the movie and I really liked it. I recommend if you read the book, or even if you do not choose to read the book to see the movie. Marley and Me (Single-Disc Edition)

Care and understanding, May 17, 2009
By Mickey Thorne - See all my reviews

This was really a good book, and exceeded my expectations. Very well written, very humane, very sappy at times. It made me laugh; it made me sad; it made me shake my head. Oh my! Some of it is almost unbelievable, and yet, the way it was told left me with no doubt that it happened. What a dog; what a love.

Good story, good writing, and great reading. I thank the author. What a story.

a good pet is not always well-behaved, May 15, 2009
By Patti "PattisPages" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This ode to a destructive Labrador Retriever is one of those alternately laugh-out-loud funny and tear-inducing books. As all of us who have pets know, though, you can't have one emotion without the other, since we usually outlive them. It's not just about the dog, either. Grogan bares all in his recounting of his wife's miscarriage, the unpleasant effort to get pregnant again, and her plunge into postpartum depression after a difficult pregnancy with their second child. Fortunately, one day she finally wakes up as her old self, and even Marley is back in her good graces. In one of his better moments, Marley stands sentry while Grogan comforts a young stabbing victim. Mostly, though, it's about Marley's many screw-ups and escapades, and it made me appreciate my cat, whose worst faults are chewing up shoelaces and noisy bathing at ungodly hours.

One of the best books, May 7, 2009
By G. Irish "reading mama" (West Branch, MI, USA) - See all my reviews

My sister first read the book and fell in love with it. So, she let me borrow it and read it and I just finished reading it. I have to say its in my top 10 book list!! If your a dog or even a pet lover you MUST read this. It takes you through John and Jenny Grogan's newlywed life and how adding a dog thats not well mannered can be stressful, on top of trying to start a family! I have to admitt, I cried like a baby at the end of the book. It was very touching and some times I would litertally laugh really hard! Marley is the type of dog that you are afraid of getting but once you get, you wouldn't want any other dog in the whole world.

Happy Reading!!!

My "Marley and Me", May 7, 2009
By Joseph R. Gallucci - See all my reviews

This review is from: Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog (Paperback)
I am so glad to be able to read "Marley and Me." After viewing the movie, I wanted to read the book which did not disappoint me. The characters came alive and being a dog lover, I really enjoyed every description of Marley's interaction with his family and anyone else he encounters. The "movie role" was hilarious. Grogan personalizes his relationship with the dog and gets the reader into the mind of Marley. In retrospect, I believe the longest lasting effect the book had on me is how a dog as wild and lovable as Marley can significantly change the lives of those people around this pet. It was a wonderful book!

A Dog Lover's Review (by Alex), April 30, 2009
By Alex - See all my reviews
What really got me into Marley and Me was the person who got the book for me, my mom. My mom had heard from a friend that it was really good and thought because we also have a Labrador I would enjoy it. As it turned out, I did not start reading this book until I heard that there was a movie coming out based on this book. So right then and there I decided before I see the movie I have to read the book.

The book Marley and Me is an unforgettable tale of the love and frustrations that come with being a dog owner. Throughout the book John Grogan learns more about dogs, and more specifically Labs, than he could have ever imagined. Even with all the trouble Marley seems to cause the Grogan family, he only has the most innocent of intentions.

This is one of the more interesting books I have read. I for one am not into reading. Granted I'm only sixteen, but I had a really hard time putting this book down so I could try and go to sleep. Marley is a lovable, adorable, and all around funny dog who just has a few screws loose. This book was a present, and it is one of the best presents I have ever gotten from anyone.

There are very few things that I dislike about this book. The one complaint I had was that some chapters just seemed to go off at a tangent with no point to them. These chapters disturbed the flow of the rest of the book in my opinion. I also felt that he did not cover Jenny's third pregnancy as much as he covered the others. He covered the first two in great detail; the third one he just seemed to say that Jenny got pregnant and a little while later the baby was there. So in some areas there was too much detail, and then in others, there was not enough.

This book is for just about anyone and everyone. If you are looking for a good laugh, something that is interesting, if you are considering buying a dog, if you love dogs or are a dog owner, this book is for you. This is the kind of exciting book that anyone can get into when they just want to read in their free time. This book is all about one dog trying to live it up to the fullest.

If you are a cranky old stuck up person who hates everything good in this world this is not a good book for you. This is a book that just makes you want to get up and play with a dog. Whether you are allergic to dogs or usually hate them, there is just no way that someone can hate this book. Even if you are a complete cat person you will fall head over heels in love with Marley.

Mr GROGAN and marley, April 22, 2009
By Sweet "Dominican Heart" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I saw this book many times at the bookstore. The book cover was so cute it just called out to me every single time. Finally I saw that the movie was coming out and at the same time I was in the process of buying a dog myself so why not read the book right?
It is actually very hard to make me hate a book but this book accomplished the impossible.
I was expecting the book to be mostly about Marley (since it is his picture on the cover and since it is HIS name first), but it isn't. It is more about the author than about the dog. Whats more is that on many occasions when the author would begin a sub-story that finally seemed to be expanding the description of Marley he would not finish it. It was as if they cut paragraphs out of the book and didn't bother to check its flow.
The book just kept loosing me on every chapter. I wanted to read about Marley not about what the hell was happening in Boca Raton in whatever year.

This book is just not well written. It does not have flow. It does not center on Marley enough. It lacks depth. I didn't even bother to finish the book because I couldn't stand all the mistakes, all the shortened stories.

I love dogs, in fact I am very much in love with my puppy. I understand how hard it is to take care of dog while working a 9-midnight job but I could never imagine leaving my dog in a garage in florida all day long 5 days a week. I lived in Miami and I can not understand how Marley did not die in that garage.

On the lighter side, this book did encourage me to research as much as humanly possible on the breed of my dog and to demand to meet both of his parents, so I did learn something...

Excellent Read, April 19, 2009
By T. Shaffer - See all my reviews

This was a great book, whether you like dogs or not. Warning...for those of you who love dogs and are pet owners, the ending is very sad and I almost couldn't finish the book even when I knew the inevitable was going to happen. It is much better than the movie, which leaves a lot of parts out that were more in depth in the book. Even if you've seen the movie, read the book to compare. You won't be disappointed.

sweet, heartfelt ... and all that, April 15, 2009
By lazza (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) - See all my reviews

'Marley & Me' delivers what you'd expect - that is, the memoir of a dog owner fondly recalling how a rather big, stupid yet lovable dog shaped his and his family's lives. Yes, Marley was incredibly disobedient. But everyone loved him just the same. The End.

Bottom line: certainly a must read for dog lovers, especially dog owners who suffer with similar Marley-type dog. For all others, watch the movie and bring an extra hankie.

Hideous and awful, April 12, 2009

How anyone could find this a "touching" or "cute" story is quite frankly beyond my comprehension. The author obviously has very low opinions of dogs, as "lower life forms" and repeatedly says he doesn't value them as highly as humans or nearly so. He abused the dog terribly - if I were a neighbor God knows I'd've called the ASPCA on this person. I was upset at the end when he told his kids Marley went to heaven - but explicitly stated himself that he doesn't believe dogs get an afterlife. No, I just can't see the charm. I want my money back - nobody should make money off this story. Would you write a book about how you beat your own child (his wife beats the dog), try to make it sound "cute" and then profit off the story?

What took me so long to read this amazing story?, April 6, 2009
By A. Hansen "AH Booklover" (Omaha, NE United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Marley & Me (Perfect Paperback)
If your still wondering, "should I read this?" and have not done so...what are you waiting for? I am stunned it took me until now to pick this up! If you love dogs, or have a dog, you'll enjoy this book and it's funny take on the craziness dogs bring to others. Large dogs can be a hand full and Marley is no different. What is amazing is how much dogs bring to our lives. They keep us company, are a shoulder to cry on, keep us motivated, allow us endless memories that we'll all talk about forever...a true family member! This book reads very quick and is worth every moment...it will make you smile!

marley & Me, April 5, 2009

Laughed like a fool and cried like a baby. This is a brilliant story about the "real" dogs in our lives

"At the first gesture of morning, flies began stirring. Inman's eyes and the long wound at his neck drew them, and the sound of their wings and the touch of their feet were more potent than a yardful of roosters in rousing a man awake. So he came to one more day in the hospital ward. He flapped the flies away with his hands and looked across the foot of his bed to an open triple-hung window. Ordinarily he could see to the red road and the oak tree and the low brick wall. And beyond them to a sweep of field and flat piney woods that stretched to the Western horizon. The view was a long one for the flatlands, the hospital having been built on the only swell within eyeshot. But it was too early yet for a vista. The window might as well have been painted grey."
