CHINATOWN

chinatown 1c.jpg

So when Laurelines showed up Saturday, we all went to Chinatown to sketch. While Laura chased little old Chinese ladies around the block, Amanda and I went scouting, and came across this amazing little store that sold paper replicas of all kinds of merchandise. Paper sneakers, paper boomboxes, paper cell phones, paper suits & ties, paper canned goods, even a paper air conditioner! We rushed back to get Laura so she, as the grownup, could verify that we weren't just imagining this place. Being from North Carolina, Laura chirped to the shopkeeper, "These are so charming! Are they for parties?" He looked at her and said, "No. Funeral." Being from Virginia, I chimed in, "Wull, can we buy them anyway?" Amanda shook her head and pulled me away. "Forget it, Walt," she said, "it's Chinatown."

you should see what he got there!?! Quite spectacular. Sparky, you're all set for the afterlife now.

Just received your book in the post this morning. Great way to start the day! Love that bit of red on the pic.

You really get our speech rhythms, Sparkles---Amanda sounds like a hard-boiled dame in some film noir and I sound perky and clueless. You shortchanged yourself, though---regular readers of Crack Skull Bob would be surprised to hear your sweet soft-spoken voice. I haven't posted drawings yet--have been too busy making them---but hope to, later today. Your portrait is going to blow your cover---again. Love your drawings and just wish everyone could see them in person. Your line quality is amazing.

I love your work, as an aspiring sketcher, I'd love to know what materials you use. In terms of pens, do you prefer fountain/dip or technical pens, also what do you recommend for watercolors ? Any books you like?

Thanks, Amrita. I guess I mostly use a Micron .02 pen these days. Fountain pens are too messy for location sketching. And until my trip to Pearl Paint last weekend, I had the cheapest possible watercolor set. Now I have an expensive one, and I'm even more confirmed in my belief that your tools are a very small factor in the quality of your work. In my opinion, the single greatest factor is daily practice, with whatever tools are at hand.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You are right about working with a small set of materials and building skills. I on the other hand get overwhelmed and buy tons of materials. Of late I have been sketching with my micon pens, I just got a rotring since I want to try different colored inks..so I will see how it goes. Keep up the good work.
