A SELF PORTRAIT THAT DOESN'T LOOK A WHOLE LOT LIKE ME

selfp9.jpg

But I spent too long on this too put it aside, daggone it. When I was young, we lived in Ohio for four years. And we kids used to say "Dag" a lot. Not as shorthand for "daggone", but more like a "wow". Like if we saw a flattened lizard on the street, the correct thing to say would be "Dag!" When we moved to Knoxville, I learned very quickly that they didn't say "dag". They used all the real bad words, including the 'f' word, often accompanied by "you". The first time I responded with "I'm rubber, you're glue, everything you say bounces off me and sticks to you" was also the last time, because that's when I was beaten to a pulp. Anyone who reads this blog knows that I prefer not to be beaten to a pulp. So it was, on balance, a negative experience for me. In Tennessee, I was shocked to discover that kids came to school in t-shirts and jeans--and sometimes barefoot! And here I was in gabardine pants and some kind of plaid shirt. Pulp time! Today, when I see a carton of Tropicana Orange Juice that says, "Lots of Pulp", I get a little twinge. That could be part of a kid who said "dag". No, I don't really. I just said that for comic effect.

Gawd, you're talented. Humourous, deathly, the dancing skeleton sort of image, and rich with text, line, colour. With the hand, mummy-type in the corner (ok, a wrapped man, ok, roped), and heiroglyphs it could be almost mystical! Well, no it is. That's the power of the artist. ha ha.... (those teeth, that eyeball)!

Tremendous energy. I like the frenetic quality to it.

My friend who lives in Brisbane calls people "dags". She told me it refers to the hard droppings from sheep that get caught on their hind quarters and legs. And another friend, from New Zealand, tells people to "rattle their dags" meaning hurry up -- and it's the sound that those hard, crusted droppings make when sheep are in a hurry.

Number 10 is up on my site.

"Dingleberries", that's charming. I learn a lot here, too. I believe Lydia has much to teach us.

Dag, that's a stunning pic, Wally. Layers upon layers of signs and symbols, in the style of that first one you did (where is it now?) which so impressed me that I,erm, suggested we have a SP competition. (Hehehe. I love repeating attention-getting sentences).

Suggested? You suggested me by the scruff of the neck, kicking and screaming.

Wow I love this. At the time of creating this you've acquired years of life experience, yet in viewing the piece, it is as if all those years/layers disintegrate. Neat sense of movement!

Oh, I like Dingleberries. That's good, Lydia. Can we say "rattle your dingleberries?" I'm going to use that a lot now. You've made my day.

yes, but does it look like you inside your head? I don't think I'd dare try to draw or paint inside my head........ well maybe I will-- soemday.

I always come here and think nothing I am doing is that deep, but oh well. I am doing what is coming to me for now-- and it's been good for me. The 8th one of mine is up on the blog-- http://rainportraits.blogspot.com/

Somehow my No.11 has appeared.
I think the reason these are so enjoyable to do is that, unlike other longer-term work, they don't demand committment or continuity. Yet they get it,just because you find yourself doing them, willy-nilly.
Or wally-nally.
Anyhow, I'm so glad my nagging worked.

Are those your teeth? And I think I now know more about dags and dingleberries then I ever wanted to and my self portrait is up. Can we do this for another month please?

I like it! I like the energy, and the 'mystical' bits. And my 4th is up, mangled eyes and mouth and all...
